Dennis made his playing debut against Crook Town on October 13th, 1971 in the Northern League Cup. Coincidentally, his final Town game was in the League Cup Final, helping the Seasiders beat Durham City 3-1 on May 10, 1977. Den managed Guisborough Town to the FA Vase Final in 1980, before joining Harry Dunn’s staff in 1996, in his position of coach/trainer at Whitby Town in that time.  Den’s worked with 35 keepers, including future Republic of Ireland international Paddy Kenny.

Denzil has also played for Blackett Hutton F.C, Guisborough Boys Club and Boosbeck United, as well as playing for Guisborugh Town, a side he would later go on to manage. Throughout his playing career, Dennis was a highly-regarded goalkeeper.

Wheeler’s long career in the game has resulted in many achievements. He has represented the FA Amatuer XI in a tie against Univerisites of England at Tranmere Rovers’ Prenton Park in 1972. This was also the case a year later, in 1973, this time the tie being played out at St James’ Park in Newcastle.  The Seasiders kit man has also been fortunate enough to be called up to the FA Amatuer Full Squad which included a four day training camp at Edge Hill College in Ormskirk in December 1972.
