Whitby travel to Garforth Town on Tuesday night in the Unibond League Challenge Cup with a 7.45pm kick-off. Garforth are managed by the controversial Simon Clifford, originally from Loftus, who has claimed to have a 25-year plan to take the West Yorkshire outfit to the top tier of English football. So far, Clifford has presided over two promotions in three seasons, with Garforth currently sitting in fourth-place in the Unibond First Division North.

Former teacher Clifford, befriended ex-Middlesbrough star Juninho and later founded the International Confederation of Futebol de Salão- a Brazilian soccer training style concentrating on ball skills, after visiting Brazil and spending years studying the reasons behind the success of football's superpower. Soon Clifford bought Garforth Town, then mired in £100,000 worth of debt, and soon had the legendary Brazilian international Socrates turning out in the Northern Counties East League, the same level as Pickering Town. The outspoken 35-year-old, who has founded soccer schools that even cater for children aged six months, choreographed the football scenes in the film 'Bend It Like Beckham' and was the basis of the character played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

Whitby have met the Leeds-based outfit just once before in competitive football, in 1996 when Graham Robinson and a David Goodchild brace helped the Seasiders to a 3-1 win on the way to the infamous 8-4 FA Cup first round replay defeat at Hull City, but enjoyed the consolation of a Northern League/FA Vase double by the end of the season.

If the scores are level, extra-time and, if needed, penalties will follow.

Simon has done very well, his Dad was a Copper at Loftus, could run but certainly was no great footballer.
